Activated Carbon Removal from Waste Streams

Activated Carbon addition is a key step in many Wastewater Treatment Systems (WWTP). The activated carbon is porous and has a large surface area, which makes it ideal for water purification via the absorption of contaminants, organics, and oils. However, for many applications, the activated carbon needs to be removed from the waste stream prior to the discharge of the water. The most effective method for removing the activated carbon is via a Filter Press.

The two main types of activated carbon are Granular Activated Carbon and Powdered Activated Carbon. A filter press can capture both types of activated carbon. The only change is we use a tighter filter weave when capturing the powered due to the smaller size of the solids.

The flow from the Waste Treatment System will enter the filter press. The water will be filtered for discharge, while the activated carbon and the contaminants it has absorbed are captured onto the Filter Press Cloth. When the filter press is full you will have a dry cake of solids. These can be hauled away as a dry filter press cake.

Lab Test for Activated Carbon Removal

Met-Chem’s Filter Press Feasibility Test is our most popular and common test conducted in our lab. This test is performed to ensure that a filter press is able to filter solids properly with your specific application. The test will allow us to determine cloth sizing and if any filter aid will be required for your slurry. With less than a gallon of your typical wastewater, we can see if a filter press will provide the desired result. We will then send you the filtrate (liquid) as well as the solids that we are able to separate from your waste stream. The filter press test will also provide information to estimate the percentage of solids in order to properly size a filter press unit.

In the diagram below, Met-Chem was able to take a sample slurry and filter the liquid from the solids.
