Edible oils are most often plant-based oils. They are used in cosmetics products, cooking oils, pharmaceutical drugs, biofuels, pesticides, and much more. While various oils are made for various reasons, the process to refine, purify, and filter oils can be similar.
Typically, oil is extracted from plant material by using a screw press or expeller. This oil is impure and has many free floating particles in it. In order to remove these impurities, often referred to as the “foots”, the oil is ran through an oil filter press. The oil filter press will separate the impurities from the oil.
While oil impurities can be captured with the filter cloths alone, filter aid is often used as a precoat. The precoat is ran through the oil filter press first to help capture smaller impurities out of the oil. The filter aid will also preserve the life of the filter cloths and help create sluge or cake during the process. Depending on the kind of oil, other purification such as dewaxing, bleaching, deorderizing maybe required.
Met-Chem manufactures new Oil Filter Presses specifically designed for the oil you need purified. The oil filter press is any easy to operate, safe and inexpensive piece of equipment to help filter impurities out of edible oils. An oil filter press can be built to food grade specifications.
