Metal Finishing Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater from Metal Finishing and Plating Operations must remove a variety of heavy metals, oils, and other toxins to be safely discharged. Wastewater treatment standards are becoming increasingly more stringent. Met-Chem understands the need for efficient and cost-effective methods to remove these metals from the wastewater. Met-Chem can develop a Custom System within your Budget keeping your company Compliant and Competitive.

Met-Chem can develop a Continuous Flow Wastewater System for larger manufacturers. Batch Waste Treatment Systems or Evaporation System for small Metal Finishing and Plating Shops.

Metal Finishing Waste Treatment Process

Equalization Tank

Incoming wastewater from various streams are collected in the equalization tank. The main function and purpose of the equalization tank is to make the wastewater homogeneous, and it maintains the desired flow rate. Depending on your specific needs, additional treatment for certain metals may need to be added, such as a chromium conversion or cyanide destruction station.

pH Adjust Tanks

By adjusting the pH (hydroxide ion concentration) of the wastewater, metals become insoluble and they become easier to remove. Typically a two-stage pH Adjustment system is used to obtain a specific pH Target. The two-stage pH system is more economical and Saves on Time, Chemicals, and Money.

pH Adjust #1

The first pH Adjust Tank is used for the gross adjustment of pH. This will narrow the pH level in order to help hit a manageable target.

pH Adjust #2

The second pH Adjust Tank is used for fine adjustment. An exact pH is needed for the polymer to help settle the Metal Hydroxides out of the water.

Clarifier

After the wastewater has had the pH adjusted, it will go into a clarifier, where polymer is added into the flocculation tank. Here the sludge settles to the bottom of the clarifier. Wastewater from the top of the clarifier can be safely discharged. While the sludge will be transferred to the Sludge Thickener Tank.

Sludge Thickening Tank

The sludge from the clarifier is collected in the Sludge Thickener. This sludge will be eventually processed by the Filter Press. Any overflow will be sent to the pump station.

Filter Press

When there is enough wastewater in the sludge thickener, the slurry from the tank is pumped into the Filter Press. The filter press separates the liquids and solids using pressure filtration. Sludge Cake will form between the filter plates, where it can be safely removed and easily discarded. The filtered water is then sent to the pump station.

Wastewater Evaporation System

If your wastewater flow rate is not high enough to justify a Batch or Continuous Flow Wastewater Treatment System, an Atmospheric or Thermal Evaporation System might be a better solution for your company. An Evaporation System can reduce your need to haul away Expensive Wastewater, and the equipment would Pay for Itself in a manner of years.
